Daido Moriyama, Farewell Photography
A grin fills two pages, cropped so tight it stops being a face. Farewell Photography works that way throughout: grain, blur, flare and smeared shapes, the camera pushed until the picture nearly falls apart into silver and paper.
Daido Moriyama published it in 1972 through Shashin Hyoron-sha as his third monograph. The 2019 reprint from bookshop M and Getsuyosha, designed by Satoshi Machiguchi with Moriyama, keeps every photograph at its original size across 280 pages, in an edition of 1000. A companion magazine adds a retrospective essay and the first English translation of his 1972 conversation with Takuma Nakahira.
The Tokyo photobook shop shashasha has sold signed copies of the reprint, and Le Plac’Art Photo has offered a signed 1972 original.
