Batman has always lived in shadow. In 1996 DC took the color away entirely: four issues, each a set of 8-page stories by a different lineup of creators, every page in black, white and the tones between.

The covers carry the idea. Jim Lee’s #1 builds a city in fine wash behind a lunging figure. Barry Windsor-Smith leaves #3 almost entirely white. Alex Toth’s #4, the last cover of the run, cuts the silhouette against a pale disc. The collected editions keep the treatment, from the 2014 new edition of the first volume to the stories from Batman: Gotham Knights gathered in Volume 3.

Inside, the names run from Joe Kubert and Bruce Timm to Bill Sienkiewicz, Brian Bolland and Katsuhiro Otomo. The whole run is on DC Universe Infinite.
